Life is an inhospitable place
Elena Chernyshova was in Norilsk, in Siberia (Russia) where she photographed the project ‘Days of Night, Nights of Day’ which shows the life of the inhabitants of a city with very special characteristics. Norilsk is the sixth most polluted city in the world, thanks to the huge industry of coal, cobalt and nickel mining. The medium life expectancy in the regionis ten years lower than in the rest of the Russian territory and the incidence of cancer is twice as high as the average. The temperatures vary between -10 and -55 degrees Celsius all year round and for the duration of two months the city does not see sunlight (polar night). The connections to the city are exclusively by air or maritime . Apart from all these characteristics which makes this place inhospitable to human life, almost 175 000 people live there.
