It is a huge sign, a gigantic & twisted neon one. They are blown lightbulbs, pieces of metal, motels with an independent movie feel. They are unending deserts, long cars and tyre tread marks on one of the world’s most emblematic roads which has been forever immortalised by the Instagram users. ‘It’s Texas, it’s Arizona, it’s the great westerns or the large industrial areas, it is very marked by the Hollywood archetypes and mythologies.’ Francisco Louça recalls. ‘Small localities where there is almost nothing, where all is abandoned, as we have seen so many times in films’, adds Paulo Furtado. ‘Little lands, some of which completely abandoned, completely ‘kitsch’, with gigantic dinossaurs in the middle of the road, or very old ‘neon’ signs, with motels that look like Indian tepees’, suggests Patrícia Naves.
