“Nenhum outro problema coloca maiores desafios e ao mesmo tempo mais oportunidades”, escrevem os jornalistas norte-americanos Mark Hertsgaard e Kyle Pope, fundadores do projecto Covering Climate Now. São 250 órgãos de comunicação social, entre jornais, rádios, televisões, blogues, podcasts espalhados pelo globo: Japão, Nova Zelândia, Reino Unido, Portugal, Espanha, Alemanha, África do Sul, EUA. A estes juntaram-se ainda cientistas, universidades, jornalistas freelancer. Porque o desafio é global, todos se comprometem a publicar trabalhos sobre alterações climáticas ao longo da semana que antecede a realização da Cimeira para a Acção Climática da ONU, a 23 de Setembro em Nova Iorque. 

A iniciativa é liderada pela Columbia Journalism Review — uma publicação da Universidade de Columbia que desde 1961 se dedica à análise mediática nos EUA — em parceria com a revista norte-americana The Nation e o jornal britânico The Guardian. Uma experiência inédita que quer chegar a uma audiência de cerca de mil milhões de pessoas. O objectivo é incentivar redacções em todo o mundo a dar profundidade à cobertura da crise climática, tornando-a mais compreensível e próxima dos leitores, ouvintes e espectadores. Entre os participantes neste consórcio estão, por exemplo, o El País, o La Repubblica, o The Times of India, as agências Getty Images e Agence France-Presse. Todos os participantes têm liberdade editorial na escolha dos temas e algumas reportagens serão partilhadas entre os membros do consórcio. 

O PÚBLICO junta-se à iniciativa e de 16 a 23 de Setembro publica uma série de trabalhos sobre alterações climáticas: qual o impacto em Portugal e o que já está a mudar no nosso país, da costa ao interior? Como estão os partidos políticos portugueses a atacar as alterações climáticas? E nas escolas, como se explicam (e combatem)? Acompanhe-nos em publico.pt/crise-climatica-agora
