There is a guitar on the duvet cover and a surf board up against the white wall. In the background, a vuvuzela and various posters. There is a trophy on the shelf, a computer, a sound system and a collection of CDs. There are common denominators in this set of pictures. Rooms of youngsters. Rooms of young soldiers. Rooms of young Israeli soldiers. British-born, Jasper White travelled to Telavive, where he met 12 youths (between 18, the age when military service is compulsory, and 22 years of age). ‘When we are young, life is simple’, said the photographer. ‘But, in some places it’s not’. ‘Young Guns’ is a series of photographs where the gun of every soldier is camouflaged – or shown – between objects normally associated with the life of a youngster. ‘the obligatory military service gives them a sense of responsibility and a purpose. For some it is a calling. It is not exactly a choice, but many look at this in a positive way – in the army you make friends for life’, White writes.
